Frequently Asked Questions About Hypnosis

1What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a deliberately induced trance state. We experience trance states in our everyday lives—for example, when you’re completely engrossed in watching a movie, or when you’re so absorbed in an activity that you lose track of time and what’s happening around you. You also experience a trance-like state when falling asleep. In hypnosis, we use this trance-like state to more easily bring about the desired changes in your emotions and behavior. Before the hypnosis session, we'll discuss in detail what you want to change and what will help you do so.
2Do I lose control when I'm under hypnosis?
Going into hypnosis is always a conscious decision. I'm offering you the chance to follow me. You are free to leave that state at any time. Under hypnosis, we can effectively address issues that feel like a loss of control in everyday life, such as immediate fear responses in certain situations. That's why I believe that hypnosis actually gives you more control.
3Is hypnosis safe?
In my experience, hypnosis is safe. The only side effect I've observed—and very rarely at that—is a sort of startle reaction to the astonishing effect, especially at the beginning, that is, when the hypnosis is being induced. You'll feel yourself relax quickly, and your body may try to compensate by increasing your heart rate. But you and I would notice that right away, and then you can just go out for some fresh air and drink a glass of water to get your circulation back on track. After that, we can certainly try again.
4How long will it take before I notice a change?
In most cases, you'll notice a change immediately after the hypnosis session, and this change will last over the long term. The way I see it, it’s a feeling of being “set on the right track,” from which you can then continue on your own. Under hypnosis, your body learns a new coping strategy that feels good and that you can continue to use.
5What exactly happens during a hypnosis session?
First, we'll discuss in detail what your concern is and what you hope to achieve. This reveals which underlying topic should be addressed today. Then we'll discuss what topics should be included in the hypnosis session. I'll provide you with some proposals, which we'll then discuss together. Then we'll do the hypnosis session, which you're welcome to record using a voice memo app so you can listen to it again later. After the hypnosis session, we'll discuss what you experienced and make sense of those experiences.
6Can anyone be hypnotized?
In research, we measure hypnotic susceptibility using a test, most commonly the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility developed by Shor and Orne in 1963. This test consists of 12 suggestions, such as the suggestion “You can no longer bend your outstretched arm.” Participants then evaluate how many of the 12 suggestions worked for them. We then calculate a total score on a scale of 0–12, where 0 means that none of the suggestions worked and 12 means that all of the suggestions worked. This sum is normally distributed in the population. In other words, most people are moderately to highly suggestible, a few are highly suggestible, and a few are very difficult to hypnotize. I also found this normal distribution in my studies. In the actual hypnosis experiments, however, suggestibility usually no longer played a role, as the suggestions worked for all participants. Suggestibility plays a greater role only when it comes to pain; in that context, we see better results in highly suggestible individuals.
7When is hypnosis particularly effective?
In my experience, hypnosis is particularly helpful where it is needed most. For example, when you're afraid or stressed, your body is already in a natural trance-like state that we can take advantage of. So if you're a little nervous before the hypnosis session, that can actually enhance the effect. In addition, a high level of motivation is helpful. If you trust the hypnotist and feel that you are in good hands, that is another factor that enhances the effect of hypnosis.

Hypnosis for Professional Athletes

Hypnosis has established itself in professional sports as an effective method for improving performance. Through targeted hypnosis techniques, athletes can improve their mental strength and concentration, reduce anxiety and stress, and recover from injuries more quickly. During trance states, positive visualizations and suggestions are used to boost self-confidence and optimize movement patterns. Many elite athletes and teams incorporate hypnosis into their training plans to gain a decisive advantage in competition and achieve their goals.

  • “During my master’s program, I had the opportunity to gain very hands-on experience with hypnosis in a seminar taught by Barbara Schmidt. I was immediately fascinated and saw how it could be applied to my sport. After all, when elite athletes perform at their peak, they are, so to speak, in a kind of trance-like state and find it easy to access hypnosis techniques. Over the years, I, too, have learned to use hypnosis for myself. On the one hand, to relax the night before a competition and visualize the course one more time. On the other hand, to reach an optimal state of activation right before the race. And finally, to better control my fears during challenging sections or after serious crashes—and even to turn them to my advantage.”

Nina Hoffmann, Vize-Weltmeisterin im Downhill Mountainbike

  • Lucas Fratzscher - deutsches Biathlon-Team
"The hypnosis session was different than I expected. I expected that I would lose control, but that wasn’t the case. Instead, it was a relaxing hypnosis session during which I always felt fully present while at the same time feeling distant and relaxed. After the session, I felt very refreshed, balanced, and focused."

    Lucas Fratzscher, Profi-Biathlet

  • Torsten Schlote - Hypnose-Expertin Barbara Schmidt
"We have invited Dr. B. Schmidt to our annual conference, 'Ophthalmology Beyond Borders,' to be held in Basel on May 4, 2024. We became aware of her work through media coverage of her research on hypnosis. Our conference has always been open to presentations from other fields of medicine. Dr. Schmidt responded very quickly to our invitation and accepted it. Her presentation on the application of hypnosis in various areas of life, including medicine—and particularly surgery—was extremely interesting and the highlight of this year’s event. Thank you for the live demonstrations and the very lively discussion!" "Your article has inspired us to reflect further on the topic of pain perception during surgery and patients' anxieties surrounding surgical procedures. We wish Dr. B. Schmidt continued success and will follow her work with great interest."

Prof. Dr. med. Torsten Schlote, Medizinischer Leiter der Tagesklinik Ambimed Basel

  • "I had the opportunity to meet Barbara Schmidt at DIVI 2023 in Hamburg. There, she gave a presentation on hypnosis for patients who were afraid of noninvasive ventilation therapy. Her approach and the results of her work opened my eyes in ways I never could have imagined! I must admit, however, that before her presentation, I was actually more on the skeptical side. During a personal conversation, I invited her to my intensive care unit in Erlangen, where she will conduct her studies on patients who require weaning from ventilators. She offered to lead a workshop for our team on her own initiative, which we conducted as a joint team of doctors and nurses. In addition to the “aha!” moments experienced by the participants, it was above all her approach and her tips for dealing with anxious, ill patients that resonated far beyond the context of the workshop or a ventilator situation. She was therefore a real asset to our daily ward routine; for many in our team, this alone changed the way we interact with our patients. I can only recommend working with her to address the fears of our intensive care patients in her own unique way and to take advantage of her expertise! You’ll benefit from it!"

Dr. rer. nat. Karl Bihlmaier, Uniklinikum Erlangen

  • Testimonial - Hypnose-Expertin Barbara Schmidt
"As someone who isn't into esoteric stuff and is more scientifically minded, I approached hypnotherapy with a healthy dose of skepticism. The skepticism has turned out to be completely unfounded. The session with Dr. Schmidt was so insightful in terms of my "psychological structures" that I've made significant progress in my life. The hypnosis is still having an effect—thanks to the recording I listen to regularly. It feels like charging a cell phone :-) I can highly recommend Dr. Schmidt both as a psychotherapist and for hypnosis. "I am grateful to have been given such a powerful tool as hypnosis—or rather, to have had the opportunity to experience it."
